What it is

⚠️ Who knew a Dask cluster could throw open its doors to the outside world? A misconfiguration here can leave your workers listening for remote visitors instead of keeping it cozy on localhost! 🚪✨ Think of your Dask setup like a restaurant with a back door that isn't locked. Instead of only serving the customers who come through the front, anyone can walk in through the back and order whatever they want - even if they're not on the guest list! This vulnerability could lead an attacker to take control of your Dask workers and execute arbitrary code, putting your entire system at risk. If your cluster is set to listen on external interfaces, it’s like inviting a thief inside your restaurant while you're busy serving dinner!

Put simply

Think of your Dask setup like a restaurant with a back door that isn't locked. Instead of only serving the customers who come through the front, anyone can walk in through the back and order whatever they want - even if they're not on the guest list! The Dask distributed package before version 2021.10.0 inadvertently configures its LocalCluster and Client workers to listen on external interfaces instead of just localhost, allowing remote code execution for attackers with access to exposed ports.

What to do

This vulnerability could lead an attacker to take control of your Dask workers and execute arbitrary code, putting your entire system at risk. If your cluster is set to listen on external interfaces, it’s like inviting a thief inside your restaurant while you're busy serving dinner! Upgrade to Dask version 2021.10.0 or later immediately to eliminate this risk. Additionally, make sure your Dask workers are configured to only listen on localhost to avoid any unauthorized access. Audit any running clusters to ensure they are secure! You've got this! Follow these steps and you'll have your Dask cluster locked down tighter than a safe! 🛡️
