What it is

🚨 A hard-coded cryptographic key is hiding in plain sight! This vulnerability in Red Lion Controls switches makes all devices share the same secret key, like every restaurant using the same recipe book — not great for security! 🔥 Imagine a restaurant where every chef uses a single, unchangeable recipe for their signature dish. If that recipe gets out, every dish becomes identical and vulnerable to imitation, no matter how skilled the chefs are. That's how these hard-coded keys work — they create a common vulnerability across all affected devices. An attacker could easily disrupt communications or compromise the entire network, leading to severe operational disruptions. Imagine if everyone at the restaurant started getting the wrong orders or, worse, tampered food! Your control systems are at risk, and that’s absolutely devastating.

Put simply

Imagine a restaurant where every chef uses a single, unchangeable recipe for their signature dish. If that recipe gets out, every dish becomes identical and vulnerable to imitation, no matter how skilled the chefs are. That's how these hard-coded keys work — they create a common vulnerability across all affected devices. This vulnerability exists in Sixnet-Managed Industrial Switches and Stride-Managed Ethernet Switches running specific firmware versions, which utilize hard-coded SSL/SSH keys that can't be regenerated by users. This means that all devices using these versions are susceptible to the same attacks since they share the same key.

What to do

An attacker could easily disrupt communications or compromise the entire network, leading to severe operational disruptions. Imagine if everyone at the restaurant started getting the wrong orders or, worse, tampered food! Your control systems are at risk, and that’s absolutely devastating. Update immediately to SLX firmware Version 5.3.174 to eliminate this vulnerability. Conduct an inventory check to ensure all switches are on the latest firmware and consider implementing additional security measures to protect your network. You've got this! By staying proactive and patching these devices, you’ll be safeguarding your systems like a true security hero! 🛡️
